I’m loving this little blanket. I just hope that the baby who it’s for will love it as he grows.

It’s not quite finished yet but soon!!

Just a stick?

I’ve had a WIP going on for awhile now and it’s starting to take shape!
I do like to set myself a challenge though it would appear!

A friend asked me if I could make her some attic24 birdies as a decoration my only instructions were you know what colours I like. Aside from that I have creative freedom. Which is ace, but my mind can be a little chaotic so I’ve been working on it in fits and bursts.

I’ve had the materials for it for awhile.
The yarn is some gorgeous cotton yarn I got from ‘according to matt’ when he had a stash clear out. At first when I was asked to make the birds I went to my local market and picked up a couple of dinky balls of yarn for 60p each, but when I started crocheting with them they made my hands itch. It was then that I realised they were polyester (not acrylic which I’d assumed!)
So Matt’s yarn was my back up plan. Although I don’t know why I didn’t think of them first as the colours are perfect, and I love working with cottons!

The next step was part of my creative freedom. Aquire a stick!
My instinct was to go to hobbycraft. Which as always seems to be the case with me & hobbycraft was an epic fail. The lift wasn’t working, which with a double pram and two children under 2 made me frustrated, without adding in that to navigate downstairs with their narrow aisles!

Hobbycraft was abandoned and off to B&Q we went.  Why didn’t I think of there first?!
I found exactly what I wanted in the bit by the skirting boards etc. And even found a man who’d cut it to the length I wanted (even if he looked at me like I was crazy with this one tiny stick!)

So this week I plucked up the guts to embark on this final stage of the decoration….

It was more difficult than I thought it would be to crochet around! I’ve had to do double crochets and have gone back along the row slip stitching to firm it up a bit.
I just hope the finished item lives up to my imagination!

And because I can’t leave you with just one picture… here is the attic24 neat ripple blanket I made for the same person which is why I know her colours so well. It was my first proper bespoke crochet request!

image

I loved making that blanket!
It was made in sirdar snuggly bamboo dk, purchased from Black Sheep Craft Barn in Culcheth. (With a few balls from ebay when I started to run out!)

I didn’t do a proper edge on it, partyly because it was a huge blanket,  but mostly because my crochet confidence back then was low. If you want to straighten a ripple blanket I’ve posted how I now do it *here* but if you google how to there are lots and lots of peoples variations on how they’ve done it.

I really must go. Mr B has requested steak amd risotto for dinner tonight so I’m trying my hand at an asparagus risotto. I chose the recipe as I’ve had a craving for asparagus!

A long overdue Ta-Dah!!

I’ve been promising myself (and you!) some pictures of recent makes.
So I’ve booted up the computer and here I am.

The following two blankets were Christmas presents. Which because of my poor time management were late christmas presents!

The first was for a friends sister. She had seen one of the rainbow granny stripe blankets that I did and coveted it, so her lovely sister asked me to make a pastelly coloured large granny square that was big enough for snuggling on the sofa!
I don’t really follow a pattern for my granny squares, I used to but because of my tension or something the squares always seemed to twist a bit which really bugs me! (I’ll have to take a picture of the blanket I made when Little H was still a “flo” bump!) So I just kind of made up my own way. Which doesn’t have a front and a back so much, because I turn after each round. As always I finished up with a “Bev’s Country Cottage Granny Square Edging” (the edge is at the bottom of that page!) Which is my go to edge for granny squares. It always finishes up so neat and makes me smile. :)
Enough with my rambling! Pictures!!!

It was made using baby DK wool (not a “brand” its a yarn I get from the wool shop at my local market) and once it was soaked and washed a couple of times (I always soak in a bit of fabric softener for an hour or so, and then wash & dry it, then trim off any tail ends that decide to show themselves after the first wash, then wash again) it was so so soft and snuggly!
I do wish I’d have put some more thought into colour order though. When I asked if she wanted any particular colour order she said go random. So I did. But next time I’m told to go random I will put an element of thought behind it! I’m still getting used to putting colours together, thats my excuse!

The next blanket was for a baby boy, the same friend asked me to do it for her nephew. And she had a cot mobile made to match by DottyDaisies. She requested primary colours and they looked awesome (even if I do say so myself!) And I made up a border that I can’t really put into words, but as I was doing it I had “follow the yellow brick road” going through my head (you’ll see why on the close up!) and I’m hoping to use it as inspiration for a blanket one day! It ended up being just a bit bigger than cotbed/toddler bed size but not quite single bed size, and I loved loved loved getting to the stage where it’s big enough to snuggle up under whilst making it!

More pictures!!! (they’re not great, the flash/light made the blocks of colour blur a little bit!)

In progress (with my beloved knit pro hook!) <3

A big picture of it in progress..

Finished!!! (excuse the bad picture, it’s the first time I’ve taken a finished picture on a bed! The bed is cotbed size)

More close ups of random parts of it. The border was one of my faves that I’ve come up with!!

Well. I think thats enough from me!
I’ve got so much more I really should share with you but I haven’t got the time right now, so keep an eye out for more updates over the next few days. They won’t be as picture heavy, maybe just one or two pictures per entry. I need to work out which projects I’m missing, and I really need to finish some WIP’s and take pictures of them too!!

Oh, and feel free to pin any pictures you like if you’re on Pinterest. I love seeing my blankets pop up on there every now and then! There should be a “Pin it” button around here somewhere, or you can install the pin it thing to the toolbar directly from Pinterest.

Hope to see you back here soon :)

Some rippley love <3

I will start by saying I love this blanket. A lot! I do always love the blankets that I make so I know I say that with every blanket, but if I didn’t love what I make then what would be the point in making things?

I was asked to do this blanket by an internet friend when she was pregnant. But like I did she stayed team green so we waited until baby arrived before picking colours. She had a baby boy and chose white, purple and blue.
When written in words I struggle to see the colours together so I went off to the little shop in our local market and spent ages makinh sure I picked the right shades. I love it if I manage to go on the right day the little cubby holes are all full of all the colours you could want and I just spend ages lining up colours and no one cares. (Yarn shopping is the only kind of shopping I love and feel relaxed about doing!)

Once I sat down and lined the colours up I decided to change up the ripple a bit. I still followed Attic24’s neat ripple pattern but I varied the colour changes because I didn’t want any one colour to totally dominate the blanket.
It’s taken me awhile to get it all finished and she’s been so lovely an patient. But she received it today and likes it so I will share with you the pictures I took before I posted it. (Good Friday was a rare sunny day squeezed between days of snow so I got to peg it on the line!)

I do love when a blanket is received and loved but I do feel a smidge sad that I won’t be curling up on the sofa under it (making it) anymore! And little H keeps asking for it to give it a kiss!

I’m particularly chuffed with the edge. Usually I just did double crochet (uk) all the way round, but as I’m getting braver I decided to straighten off the top and bottom of the ripple.  I was sure that I’d seen a how to on attic24 but I couldn’t find it (I’m still not sure if it does exist but I just couldn’t see it.)

Here’s a close up of what I did… (I can’t remember if I already blogged about this sorry!)

image

I want to try and write how I did it but I’m not very good at explaining crochet so I apologise if it’s poorly put! (UK terms

Slip stitch in the 2 most central stitches from the ‘peak’ of the ripple. Double crochet in the next one. Half treble crochet in the next two stitches. Treble in the next two stitches then double treble in the next two stitches (these two should be in the 2 stitches at the bottom of the valley)
After the double trebles just reverse what you’ve done. So treble in the next two, half treble in the next two, double crochet in the next one and slip stitch in the next two (back at the peak)

So it’s :- *sl st, dc, htr, htr, tr, tr, dbl tr, dbl tr, tr, tr, htr, htr, dc, sl st*
Repeat from * to *

On the next round of the border I just double crocheted all the way around. (I hope that makes some sense!)

Right I best go, I’ve been writing this on and off for awhile whilst the boys play and nap. Need to make some dinner. :)

One last picture.. all packed up ready to go.
